Cupcake #115 **sold**

This cupcake is showing off its complementary colors! Yellow and purple swirl together in a great floral shape. Complementary colors can be used to neutralize each other, add a bit of purple to yellow and you go from bright lemon to yellow ochre into deep mustard, but just a bit! Cupcake # 82 **sold**

One of the interesting things for me in this blog is watching Scott's progression as an acrylic painter, he is just getting better and better. This piece is simply grand, from the shadows in the icing, to the modeling and negative painting techniques he uses in the pecans. All surrounded by a deep purple that makes the chocolate look a little warmer, and the icing a little creamier. One of my favorite color theory lessons of all time was when I learned that one way to change a color was to change the color around it. A really neutral or dull color can make another look brighter, and a cool color can make the others seem warmer. Enjoy!

Wow, here we are at cupcake #75! Time flies when you're having fun as they say. Today's cupcake is perfectly gorgeous, but really how can you go wrong with chocolate and a cherry on top? All surrounded by my favorite color, purple. Which sounds much more sophisticated if you call it eggplant, or better yet, the french, aubergine. Cheers!

Cupcake #69 **sold**

Mmm, blackberries and chocolate, who would have thought? Purple is one of my favorite colors, especially when it is paired with it's neighbor on the color wheel, blue. Even the cup has a hint of color. Repeating a color in a composition makes the eye move around and makes a piece pleasing to look at. And of course the fact that it's a cupcake makes it pleasing also! Enjoy the first cupcake of 2010, there will be many more to come!

Cupcake #65 **sold**

This rich chocolate cupcake is sitting pretty in a purple cup, covered in bits of candy. Cinnamon candy I think, we'll have to test that later! The candy, cup and background are all analogous colors, as red, purple and blue sit next to each other on the color wheel. Although a cool ultramarine blue would sit closer than this almost turquoise. Enough of that for our first day back! Cupcake #57 **sold**

Now this is a stunning cupcake! We were at The Atlanta Cupcake Factory last week (shameless plug) when I saw this cupcake. "Oooh, do this one!" Scott said he didn't think he could, how do you paint red sugary glitter? But we bought it anyway, and a few days later he comes down the studio stairs with this. Wow, it's like Dorothy's ruby red slippers, and red candy apples rolled into one! All on an eggplant colored background, who would have thought a cupcake could be so dramatic? Cheers to the drama queens in our lives!

Cupcake #52 **sold**

There is simply nothing shy about this little painting. The swirl of purple icing is surrounded by it's complementary color, which really makes this piece pop! Sometimes in order to figure out what the opposite color on the color wheel would be, you need to map it out. Start by drawing a small circle, place yellow at the top, purple at the bottom, and fill in the other colors along the edge. Clockwise this would read yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, green, and back to yellow again. Then you can find this purple would actually fall somewhere between purple and red, then shoot across the wheel to find it's complement...which winds up between yellow and green. Enjoy this cupcake, alone or in a group, it just sings!

Cupcake #45 **sold**

Here's one for all you whipped cream fans (can I hear Herb Alpert in the background? Boy does that date me or what?) Mounds of puffy cream, lavender background, and all the pretty color variations in the cup, not to mention the cream itself. Notice the complimentary colors, yellow and purple reflecting on the white. This is one of Scott's favorites, we'll see you next week!

Cupcake #20! **sold**

Wow, here we are with cupcake #20, that brings us to the end of four weeks on the daily cupcake! But have no fear, we have grand aspirations with this project, which we will reveal as time goes by! In the meantime #20 is a juicy little reminder of summer, now that we've had to turn the furnace on even in Georgia! Warm corals with that delicious deep purple. And you know the cupcake must have been warm to make the icing run off like that!
