Let me clarify that, red and orange are the neighbors, or the analogous colors, as they sit next to each other on the color wheel. Pink and peach are tints of those colors, made by adding white. Picky, picky, I know! This sweet vanilla cupcake is topped with balls of white chocolate, and pink sprinkles, sure to make someone's day!

This cupcake definitely falls into the "grown up" category, simple vanilla, topped with a swirl of almost Wedgwood blue icing. The background is one of those soft neutral colors that is difficult to describe. Is it sand, bone, antique white, or putty perhaps? Purple and teal has long been a favorite color combination of mine. Teal is really a blue that leans towards the green side of the spectrum, like aqua and turquoise. And this purple is really beautiful, you can see how it goes back and forth from blue to almost pink in the swirls of icing, showing off all that purple can be. Topped of course with two fabulous blackberries, can't you just taste it?

Here's a new one for the fruit fans! Blueberries and a raspberry top this simple vanilla cupcake. The background is a bright spring green. This piece would play nicely with others with taupe backgrounds, or even tangerine!

Today's cupcake is simple, yet stunning. Vanilla cake topped with a triple dose of chocolate, surrounded by a beautiful deep pink. This color is made by mixing two different reds, cadmium red, and quinacridone magenta, with just a touch of white. Such a pure clean color it practically sings! Here's one for all the chocoholics out there, you know who you are! A simple vanilla cupcake to begin with, with a beautiful swirling mound of deep dark chocolate, finished with just the right amount of rainbow sprinkles. The background is a neutral taupe. This little number will play very well in a group, as the little flecks of color will help it work with more colorful pieces. Yet it is also so neutral it gives the eye a rest between the more intense colors. Enjoy!

I love magenta, fuchsia, or hot pink, and this little cupcake has lots of it! Red currants top this little number, although I'm pretty sure you wouldn't eat them raw, they do provide plenty of color punch. If it weren't for the little sliver of cake that shows, this would be a monochromatic painting. That is one color plus shades or tints made with black and white. But that touch of yellow, just helps it shine! Cheers!

A key lime cupcake, sitting in a jazzy little cup. Surrounded by a sky blue background, this is as fresh and pretty as can be! I love the way the icing curls on this one! Green and blue are analogous colors, and since the blue is lightened to the same value as the green, that makes this an analogous discord. This is why the colors sing so! Enjoy!

A happy little birthday cupcake on pink. Sprinkled with all the colors of the rainbow...well the basics anyway! Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet. My 4th grade science teacher added "Indigo" between blue and violet to help remember the order by giving it a name, Roy G Biv. Only problem with that is indigo would actually fit between green and blue in the color spectrum (sigh.) But I guess it worked as far as the remembering goes...as I'm telling you about it 30+ years later! Enjoy this little treat, and if you know of a little girl with a birthday coming, starting an art collection sounds like a great gift idea to me!

This cupcake is showing off its complementary colors! Yellow and purple swirl together in a great floral shape. Complementary colors can be used to neutralize each other, add a bit of purple to yellow and you go from bright lemon to yellow ochre into deep mustard, but just a bit! A simple little vanilla cupcake with sprinkles. When we think vanilla we think white, or cream, maybe with a hint of yellow. But take a look at the color peeking out from this cupcake. If we were talking about additive color theory, such as what happens when different colored lights are used, white is considered a mixture of all the primaries. Theatre lighting is where you would use additive color theory. But on canvas, adding color to whites gives them life! Usually this is achieved by allowing reflected colors to show through, like Scott did here, the deep burgundy background is reflected in the icing. The whole thing is just warm and inviting, a cupcake like your grandma would have made! Enjoy!
