The first thing that I thought about when I saw this cupcake was how it held all the colors of a sunset! Yellows, and oranges even that dusky purple that happens right at the end. That, and the fact that the icing is piled so high there is no way to eat it without icing getting on your nose! Always a good thing! Enjoy!

A little bit of peppermint to ease us into the holiday season! Surrounded by a sweet pink background, this is almost a monochromatic painting. Monochromatic is when only one hue is used, in this case red, with black and white to allow for all the tints and shades. The sliver of cake showing through is why it's only an "almost." A sparkling birthday cupcake, with wonderful thick chocolate icing, sprinkled with those magical silver and turquoise dragees. The background, not wanting to compete with the main event is a subtle taupe. So why is it marked NFS? It's my birthday, and this is my present! Mine, all mine! Sitting on top of this cupcake is a crispy chocolate shell that is no doubt holding something wonderful! Drizzled with a little icing, and topped with a tiny strawberry, I can sense chocolate bliss! The background is a purple that's reminiscent of blackberries, hmmm, maybe that's a clue to what's inside? This is cupcake #315, that means only 50 cupcakes to go, get them while they're hot!

Cupcake #313

Luscious lemon, piled high and sprinkled with a bit of pink sugar. Sitting on a pale blue background. The use of pink yellow and blue makes this a primary triad, as the colors are all tints of the three primary colors. Using a triad, being three colors that are equal distance from each other on the color wheel gives this piece a good sense of balance. It works with purple, orange, and green too, try it!

Everything's coming up roses! Chocolate, cupcake, cookie, cream, and a cherry, all those c's make for one pretty cupcake, and are a definite threat to my waistline! Toss in the funky polka dotted background, and this would certainly brighten someones day. Cheers!

There is something about the combination of violet and green that really appeals to me. They are all analogous colors as green, blue, and violet are all neighbors on the color wheel. The green has been neutralised with red to allow the purple to sing, and sing it does! Have a great day!

Pink, and it's neighbor on the color wheel, peach are the stars of this show. Let me clarify that, red and orange are the neighbors, or the analogous colors, as they sit next to each other on the color wheel. Pink and peach are tints of those colors, made by adding white. Picky, picky, I know! This sweet vanilla cupcake is topped with balls of white chocolate, and pink sprinkles, sure to make someone's day!

Chocolate, coconut, cookies, three of my favorite things! The background is a crisp icy blue, one of my favorite colors to pair with mocha brown. I don't know about you, but I think this cupcake has moved right past all those autumn colors into winter...brrr!

A delicious study in complementary colors! Yellow and violet sit across from each other on the color wheel, therefore they are opposites, or complementary. Yellow is a good choice to neutralise violet, and violet will neutralise yellow. Good to know if you are trying to mix anything between a warm gold to a plum. You just have to take a look out your window to understand the inspiration for this cupcake. Great billowing clouds of bright golden yellow contrasting with deep burnt reds, soft beige, and flecks of fiery orange surround our house right now, simply stunning. Now close your eyes and think of the flavor of pumpkin pie. A big story, for one little cupcake, enjoy!

Chocolate cherry cupcake with a cherry on top! Try saying that three times fast! Drizzled shiny chocolate sauce over piped rich cherry frosting. The maraschino cherry rests on its side to fit into the composition. The background, a cool slate blue pulls it all together, sweet dreams!

More autumn colors coming out of the studio. This maple pecan cupcake is sitting on a deep burgundy background. Burgundy is essentially a neutralised shade of red. Begin with a bright stop sign red, add a bit of purple, and a touch of black. The trick to mixing colors well is to mix them often, and of course keep track of what works and what doesn't. A deep chocolate cupcake piled high with milk chocolate frosting and drizzled with strawberry sauce. Yum! Resting on a pale blue grey background, this is sure to appeal to the chocoholic in your life! I can just imagine this on a chocolate brown wall, simply stunning.

This simple creamy yellow cupcake just glows sitting on a dark background. You'll find surfing through past cupcakes that the backgrounds rarely get beyond mid range in the value scale. But the deep raisin brown works as a nice contrast to the pale colors of the subject. And the brown would make this little number pair up nicely with a dark chocolate cupcake! Enjoy!

What a crazy beautiful cupcake! Folks often assume I spend most of my waking hours in the kitchen baking all these wonderful cupcakes for Scott to paint. I hate to break it to you, but I haven't baked a single one! Many of them are purchased at our favorite cupcake haunts, and some of them simply come out of Scott's imagination. Like this one! I have no idea what kind of icing could be so bright and glossy, yet not run off the cupcake. But Scott doesn't have to worry about what's possible in the real world! Have a great day!
